Alkalinity in Alpine Florida Water

Unhealthy Levels of Alkalinity in the Water Supply of Alpine Florida Homes

Alkalinity is a measure of water’s ability to neutralize acids, mostly determined by dissolved bicarbonates, carbonates, and hydroxides. In a household this often shows up as a flat or “soda-like” taste, quick-forming scale on faucets and appliances, and soap that won’t rinse away clean. It can also make water chemistry feel resistant to small treatments — changes that should help sometimes seem to have little effect. Though related to pH, alkalinity is a separate characteristic and can be out of balance even when pH appears normal.

Because alkalinity comes from natural minerals, levels can differ block to block and shift with seasonal changes in source water — something local homeowners in Alpine, Florida may notice. Many people first suspect an alkalinity issue when coffee or tea tastes strange, glassware spots easily, or white deposits return shortly after cleaning. Elevated alkalinity can also reduce the effectiveness of point-of-use filters and some water softeners, since the overall water chemistry still favors scale formation. A straightforward water test will tell whether alkalinity is a factor in your home's water issues.
