Coliform Bacteria in Bayou George Florida Water

Unhealthy Levels of Coliform Bacteria in the Water Supply of Bayou George Florida Homes

Coliform bacteria are a group of microorganisms commonly used to indicate how well water is being protected. If testing shows coliform bacteria in your supply, it can mean untreated water is entering plumbing through a compromised well, a cross-connection, or other intrusion—issues Bayou George homeowners should be aware of. Because coliforms often don’t change taste or smell, laboratory analysis is the reliable way to detect them. You may also see the term total coliforms on a lab report, which refers to the broader coliform group.

Locally, when total coliforms appear on a report the usual next steps are repeat sampling, finding and fixing potential entry points, and considering a whole-house barrier to protect every tap in your Bayou George home. Total coliforms are different from E. coli but can indicate conditions where other microbes might occur, so many homeowners prefer treatment at the point of entry so the entire household is covered even as test results fluctuate over time.
