Earthy Taste in Orange Florida Water

Unhealthy Levels of Earthy Taste in the Water Supply of Orange Florida Homes

An earthy taste in your water can make drinking, cooking, and even brushing your teeth unpleasant for Orange homeowners. Many people describe it as musty, like damp soil, or a lingering “pond” flavor. This often comes from natural organic matter and the compounds it produces, especially when surface water is part of the supply. Even if your water passes safety tests, that off taste can still make it seem unclean or unpalatable.

Earthy taste typically comes from compounds such as geosmin and 2-MIB, produced by algae, bacteria, or decaying plant material in source waters. It can become more noticeable after seasonal shifts, maintenance or disturbances in the distribution system, or changes in treatment processes. Because these compounds are detectable at extremely low concentrations, small changes can make the flavor seem much worse. The good news is that taste and odor problems like this are often correctable with the right filtration strategy.
