Including filter system and high-performance Earthy Taste filter.
An earthy taste in your water can make drinking, cooking, and even brushing your teeth unpleasant for Peck households. People often describe it as musty, like damp soil, or a lingering “pond” flavor. This issue frequently stems from natural organic matter and the compounds it forms, particularly when surface water contributes to the source. Even when water meets safety guidelines, the flavor can still signal that something doesn’t taste right.
Earthy taste is commonly caused by geosmin and 2-MIB, which originate from algae, bacteria, and decaying plant material in source water. It can appear after seasonal shifts, distribution system changes, or adjustments in treatment that alter smell and flavor. Because these compounds are detectable at very low concentrations, even minor changes can be noticeable. The upside is that taste and odor problems like this are often fixable with an appropriate filtration strategy.
To address earthy taste throughout a Peck home, a whole-house activated carbon filter is usually the best single-filter choice. Catalytic carbon or a dense activated carbon media is specifically designed to adsorb the trace compounds that cause musty, earthy flavors and odors. Installed at the main water line, it treats water before it reaches your kitchen, bathrooms, and showers, so every tap delivers better-tasting water rather than relying on a small point-of-use solution.
A correctly sized carbon tank provides the contact time necessary for effective adsorption, which is essential for removing taste and odor issues. This method targets the source of the flavor without adding chemicals or simply masking the problem. Many Peck homeowners prefer whole-house carbon filtration as a durable solution that maintains consistent water quality for drinking, cooking, and bathing, helping smooth out the taste changes that can occur over time.
