Silica is a natural mineral that can appear in tap water as dissolved silica or as silicates. While it often won't affect flavor, it can cause persistent household annoyances. When heated or left to evaporate, silica tends to leave stubborn deposits that are tougher to remove than ordinary mineral scale.
