Silica is a naturally occurring mineral that can appear in tap water as dissolved silica or as silicates. While it doesn’t always change flavor, it can create persistent household headaches: when heated or left to evaporate, silica leaves behind tough deposits that are often harder to remove than ordinary mineral scale. On the Treasure Coast—where moderate hardness and coastal conditions affect plumbing—you may spot more spotting on glass, buildup on faucets and showerheads, and reduced efficiency in hot-water appliances.
Dissolved silica is stable in water and can be tougher to treat than the calcium and magnesium targeted by typical softeners. Standard water softeners in places like Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, or Fort Pierce may improve hardness but usually won’t fully address silica or silicates.
